My Name is KenMeans..I
am a Music teacher in the Unionville-Chadds
Ford School District, which is located in
Chester County, Pennsylvania...USA
I teach instrumental music to 4th and 5th
graders at Hillendale Elementary School....I have been teaching for 27

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC at HILLENDALE
Students begin studying band instruments
in the 4th grade. We use the King Musical Appraisal to test the students,
and we use this assessment as a means of instrument assignment. Most
students however, receive their 1st or 2nd choice
in instruments.
Students are then assigned to lesson groups
. Groups consist of like instrument up to 1o students.
Half-hourpullout lessons meet weekly and are always the same
day and time.
We have both a 4th
and a 5th grade band. Each band rehearses once a week
during recess. The 5th grade band begins rehearsal in early September,
and the 4th grade band starts up in January.
About a month before our
concert, the students come in early twice a week fora 1/2 hour rehearsal
before homeroom.
We have two concerts during
the school year. In December, our Winter Concert includes the following
groups:
5th Band
String Ensemble
Chorus
In the spring, our 4th grade
band and strings give an evening concert during Open House. Our more
advanced groups perform in the evening Spring Concert.
